Iron is a durable and versatile material known for its strength, sculptural elegance, and earthy appeal. Whether used as a structural frame or a decorative element, Elevated Living’s iron pieces are crafted with longevity in mind. This guide outlines best practices for cleaning, protecting, and preserving iron finishes—painted, sealed, or raw.

Daily & Routine Care

1. General Cleaning

  • Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfiber cloth.
  • For light dirt or debris, wipe gently with a cloth dampened in warm, soapy water.
  • Always dry immediately after cleaning to avoid water spots or rust.

2. Coated or Painted Iron Surfaces

  • Use only a damp cloth with mild soap and avoid abrasive scrubbers.
  • Avoid contact with harsh chemicals that can strip the finish or cause bubbling.

3. Raw or Natural Iron Finishes

  • Use a dry or lightly damp cloth only. Avoid water where possible.
  • Apply a thin coat of metal wax or clear paste wax periodically to protect the surface.

Preventative Measures

1. Moisture Control

  • Iron is prone to rusting when exposed to moisture for extended periods.
  • Use coasters, placemats, or trays to prevent water rings from cups, planters, or cookware.
  • In humid climates, consider placing silica gel packs nearby to reduce condensation buildup.

2. Scratch & Abrasion Prevention

  • Place felt pads or protective bumpers under iron bases or accessories.
  • Do not drag iron pieces across floors or other surfaces.
  • Avoid stacking or nesting iron decor unless padded in between.

Rust Prevention & Treatment

1. Regular Maintenance

  • Inspect for signs of corrosion, especially in joints or crevices.
  • Reapply wax or protective finish every 6–12 months for raw iron.

2. Rust Spot Removal

  • Use 0000-grade fine steel wool or a soft brass brush to gently buff affected areas.
  • Follow with a dry cloth and apply a clear rust-inhibiting wax or sealant.
  • Do not use abrasive sandpaper or harsh chemical rust removers without professional guidance.
