While it is easy to focus first on the functional aspect of your outdoor pillows, begin by considering how they complement your outdoor furniture. Many companies have a wide variety of colors and patterns, so consider the style you are going for. If your furniture is bright and bold, try a more subtle pillow to act as an accent. Keep a photo of your existing patio décor on hand as an easy reference point when shopping.

Once you’ve chosen a style that works, then it’s time to talk about durability. Outdoor pillows are constantly exposed to the elements, so you need to make sure that they can withstand whatever Mother Nature throws their way.  Polypropylene is the best choice for outdoor cushions because it dries quickly when wet and has no dye sites. As a result, it is very colorfast. Polypropylene is also mildew and stain resistant.

To clean your outdoor cushions and pillows, start by vacuuming or brushing away any loose dirt and debris. If there are any visible stains, treat them with a mild soap and warm water solution before rinsing with clean water. Allow the cushions to air dry completely in a sunny spot before using them again. For more stubborn stains, you may need to use a stronger cleaning solution or even pressure wash the fabric. Be sure to test any cleaning solutions in an inconspicuous spot first to avoid damaging the fabric.

Reapply a water repellent finish as needed according to manufacturer instructions. When not in use, store your outdoor pillows in a cool, dry place such as a garage or shed. If you live in a humid climate, consider storing them in a plastic bag to prevent mildew. Be sure to fluff and air out your outdoor pillows on a regular basis.
